Diving Suit Hoses Recalled Due to Drowning Hazard

SI Tech AB, in conjunction with the CPSC, announced a recall of 65,000 Diving Air Hoses for Dry Suits because an insert on the hose can dislodge during divining, which in turn restricts air flow to the diver, posing a drowning hazard.

The recall involves a dry suit inflation hose that connects a diver’s dry suit to the air supply and allows for the pumping of air into the suit to set up a positive pressure arrangement to help keep it watertight. The hose contains an air flow restricting insert that may be black, blue or green in color.

To this date, the company has received six reports of hose inserts dislodging, including one reported death of a diver in Los Angeles, California.

The recalled equipment was manufactured in Sweden and sold nationwide at diving equipment retailers and distributors from July 2006 to February 2009.

Consumers should contact SI Tech for the location of an authorized dealer for a free repair. In the meantime, the diving equipment should not be used.

Call SI Tech at (877) 348-3529 anytime, or visit www.sitech.se

Hooker Furniture Recalls Bunk Beds Due to Strangulation Hazard

Hooker Furniture Corporation, in conjunction with the CPSC< is recalling about 1,300 bunk beds because they pose a strangulation hazard to children.

The bunk beds have gaps between parts of the upper bunk that could allow a child's body to pass through but not a child's head. This poses an entrapment or strangulation hazard to children and exceeds the space allowed by the federal bunk bed safety standard.

The recalled bunk beds were available in both twin beds, a twin over a full and loft beds. The bunk beds were sold under "Albany Park," "Swedish Accents," "Mariner's Landing," and "Chelsea's Place" model names. The recalled product came in three different colors: cherry, white, and black finishes. Some models of the bunk beds were available in metal instead of wood.

So far there have been no reported injuries to the company. The recalled beds were available at Hooker Furniture stores across the nation from August 2005 to August 2007. The bunk beds were manufactured in Malaysia and Vietnam.

For more information on this subject, please refer to our section on Defective and Dangerous Products.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Jenny Albano

Congress Launches Probe into Pet Food Recall

The House Oversight and Government Reform Domestic Policy Subcommittee Chairman Dennis Kucinich, D-Ohio is launching an investigation into the Menu Foods recall. Over 90 brands of dog and cat food have been recalled. Researchers have discovered melamine in the wheat gluten used to make the food. Other tests have found rat poison, but that has not been confirmed by the FDA. The investigation is into the FDA's handling of the recall.

Kucinich posed as many as 20 specific questions to Sundlof in a letter dated Tuesday, including a request for FDA plant inspection reports over the last two years.

"Millions of American families have a right to be assured that everything possible is being done to protect the health of their beloved family pets," Kucinich, owner of two beagles and a cocker spaniel, said this week. A Kucinich spokeswoman said the subcommittee might conduct a hearing on the issue.

The House Agriculture Appropriations Subcommittee is also launching an investigation. The recall has focused on canned and foil packet wet dog and cat food, but the recall has expanded to at least one brand of dry food.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Shannon Weidemann

Cat and Dog Food Recalled Across North America

Pet food manufactured for Menu Foods from December 3, 2006 to March 6, 2007 has been recalled. The recall involves wet food that is found in cans and foil packets. The pet food is for cats and dogs and includes about 88 brands. The food can possibly cause kidney damage in pets.

Symptoms for pet owners to watch for include vomiting, diarrhea, lack of appetite, excessive urination, excessive drinking, weight loss, lethargy and dehydration, according to Foothill Veterinary Clinic Receptionist Wendy Harrington. She said the clinic has had some cases and calls about the issue but cannot confirm yet if they are related to the recall. She said the only way veterinarians can diagnose kidney failure is through blood work so it can be difficult to fully treat the problem right away.

Treatment includes fluid therapy, syringe feeding and daily maintenance of medication, Harrington said. As of recently, the clinic had not received any information from Menu Foods.

If you are worried that your pet food is involved in the recall you can check a full list here: http://www.menufoods.com/recall. If you believe that your dog or cat has been affected by this pet food recall and would like to speak with an attorney, please use the contact form on the right.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Shannon Weidemann

Pennsylvania Jury Awards $3 Million to Ohio Woman in Cancer Suit

A jury in Pennsylvania awarded $3 million to a woman from Ohio who proved a hormone replacement drug manufactured by Wyeth caused her breast cancer.

Wyeth manufactures Prempro to treat symptoms of menopause. However, Jenny Nelson, 67 of Dayton, Ohio, was found to have breast cancer in 2001 after taking the drug.

Over 5,000 women have sued Wyeth for personal injury or death resulting from Prempro and Premarin, four of which have gone to trial. Nonetheless, Wyeth is not disturbed by the drug defect and continues to prescribe the medication to hundreds of thousands of women annually. A representative of Wyeth, based in Madison, New Jersey, stated it would appeal the Ohio woman's verdict.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Scott Smith

Overuse of Antibiotics May Lead to Creation of Superbugs

New strains of superbugs have proven resistant to those exposed to common macrolide antibiotics used to treat respiratory infections. Professor Herman Goossens of University Hospital in Antwerp Belgium showed ingestion of even a single course of this specific antibiotic can lead to a buildup in resistance resulting in mutations for superbugs resulting in personal injury or death.

Scientists who conducted the study reported the findings in The Lancet Medical Journal after testing more than 200 healthy volunteers. The scientists took several samples of bacteria from the volunteers before and up to six months after giving them antibiotics. The levels of resistant bacteria rose following the drug treatment. This mounting evidence has caused concern in the medical community for the use of macrolide antibiotics utilized in respiratory illnesses as the new strains of infection have grown resistant to even the most powerful antibiotics.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Scott Smith

Poisoned Peter Pan Peanut Butter

Salmonella was discovered in Peter Pan peanut butter purchased as late as May 2006 and therefore anyone who possesses the spread should discard it. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration found salmonella contaminated the peanut butter and that more than 290 people from 39 states have become ill. Forty-six of those individuals have been hospitalized according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

Many lawsuits have been filed throughout the country including Kansas City, Missouri, Rochester, New York, and Texas, all against ConAgra, manufacturer of the peanut butter. Even though it is currently undetermined how salmonella got into the peanut butter, evidence points to dirty jars or equipment inasmuch as peanuts are usually heated to such a high temperature that all germs are killed in the process. Food poisoning from salmonella reportedly causes sickness in approximately 40,000 people a year and kills about 600. Symptoms include diarrhea, fever, dehydration, abdominal pain and vomiting as well as other personal injury.

Jack Landskroner of Cleveland, Ohio has a very interesting article on this subject on his website located at http://cleveland.injuryboard.com/defective-products/peanut-butter-linked-salmonella-outbreak-has-sickened-almost-300-people.php

For more information you can contact us directly through the online intake or phone us through InjuryBoard at our toll free number 800-593-5446.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Scott Smith

Salmonella Discovered in Frozen Cat Food

Wild Kitty cat food, a frozen raw product, was discovered contaminated with salmonella according to the Food and Drug Administration. Because cats can become infected with salmonella and humans can be infected by handling the cat food, the FDA warned pet owners not to purchase the product. Wild Kitty cat food is made by a small company in Kennebunkport, Maine and sold at pet stores in several states. Food poisoning from salmonella is especially serious for small children, frail or elderly people or people with chronic diseases this can cause serious personal injury and on occasion, death.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Scott Smith

Swearing Toy Is Product Defect And Offends Parent

With the holiday season rapidly approaching, the scramble to find the right gift has a father upset when a defective toy he purchased from Toys "R" Us uttered offensive swear words. The swearing toy is a police officer equipped with a utility belt. The belt has a button on the side that when pushed, swears. The toy manufacturer, TekNek, defended the toys pronunciation of "Stop" as appropriate even though the toy clearly yells the "f-word", the boys parent said.

The boys father requested the store take the toy off the shelves but the company refused referring him instead to the manufacturer who also refused to pull the toy. The only recourse the father was offered was a toy that didn't swear, leaving other unsuspecting parents the chance the same model of toy may contain the same product defect. Subjecting a young child to a defective product that swears not only offends a parent's sensibilities but could cause personal injury to the child. Anyone who has experienced a toy who swears should contact Smith Phillips so that appropriate action can be taken to force the store to remove the toy from the shelves.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Scott Smith
