Salmonella was discovered in Peter Pan peanut butter purchased as late as May 2006 and therefore anyone who possesses the spread should discard it. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration found salmonella contaminated the peanut butter and that more than 290 people from 39 states have become ill. Forty-six of those individuals have been hospitalized according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

Many lawsuits have been filed throughout the country including Kansas City, Missouri, Rochester, New York, and Texas, all against ConAgra, manufacturer of the peanut butter. Even though it is currently undetermined how salmonella got into the peanut butter, evidence points to dirty jars or equipment inasmuch as peanuts are usually heated to such a high temperature that all germs are killed in the process. Food poisoning from salmonella reportedly causes sickness in approximately 40,000 people a year and kills about 600. Symptoms include diarrhea, fever, dehydration, abdominal pain and vomiting as well as other personal injury.

Jack Landskroner of Cleveland, Ohio has a very interesting article on this subject on his website located at http://cleveland.injuryboard.com/defective-products/peanut-butter-linked-salmonella-outbreak-has-sickened-almost-300-people.php
