The US Federal Court of Claims awarded $143 Million to three nuclear fuel reactor operators because the government failed to remove used reactor fuel rods. The award could be the sign of more lawsuits and awards to come for other operators who also claim the federal government failed to follow contractual agreements that nuclear waste was to be taken from the sites by 1998. Consequently, the nuclear waste remains above ground and at risk for a nuclear accident. The government complained the nuclear rods could not be removed because there was no place to store the nuclear waste. The government plans to appeal the ruling.
